Just did a build a week ago using my 8+ year old power supply and its attached fan as part of the components. Ever since I first started it up, there has been this faint, high-pitched, high frequency sound coming from the front of the case where I installed the power supply fan (and where a fan that came pre-installed with the case is). I hear it more often than not, but it does have its moments of silence.
I'm around 85% sure that the old fan is what's causing the noise, but it's never happened when it was still inside my old computer, and taking it out did not help in determining whether or not my guess is true as its wires disallowed it from getting too far away from the case. I also tried just stopping it via cloth+finger while it was running to see if the noise would stop with it, but the uncovered noise of the other components made it really hard to hear the difference.
Since I can't turn the fan off, the only way to test my theory without cutting the wires is to buy a new power supply. So before I do that, are there any other possible components aside from the fan that would be able to generate this noise? Anything else I can do to test? Or should I just be buying a new PSU anyway since it's so old?
