High gpu activity and high gpu temps when idling?

My main specs go as follows : Amd R9 280x, Amd FX 8350, 8gigs of rams, and a Rosewell 750w psu. As far as I know this a relatively recent issue. I checked for viruses, re-installed drivers, all of that good stuff. I don't know what to do haha. This pc isn't even a year old yet. The activity is above 90%, and the temps are a little above 80.

I had a similar issue once, and I discovered that it was caused by a virus, which was stealthily using my GPU to Cryptomine, probably sending the info back to a botnet host in Russia or China. It didn't take long for me to weed it out, and the horse it rode in on. When you say you checked for viruses...what all did you use? because it still might be lurking if it is a trojan.

I guess a quick way to check if it is not this is to boot up in safe mode, so that most of your third party programs will not be running, it could be that some application you have installed is utilising your GPU without you realising. Look within your processes under tasks manager and check under the "descriptions" tab and see if there are any vendors that you don't recognise aside from programs and Windows services that you do. See if there are any that are using a disproportionate amount of RAM or CPU....that may point out the culprit/infection.

Usually when I get an issue like this, I just reformat the OS drive and reinstall and "nuke the site from orbit.... It's the only way to be sure." 😉

I did a couple scans with malwarebytes, and a scan with MSE. I looked in all the processes with Process Explorer and none of the processes seem to be using really any gpu, or any real cpu/ram. Re-installing windows is pretty much the last thing I want to do haha.

To be fair, if it was a Cyptomining virus, it would be running your GPU at full load. i.e. 100% So It is more likely to be a third party program running the GPU when idle. So check in safe mode. If it is normal when in safe mode, then look to things like overlays such as FRAPs or graphics card programs like MSI Afterburner etc....stuff that gives you on-screen display overlays, or maybe even Java and Chrome (if installed) to see if there is an extension running in background which utilises the GPU.

Another thing, when I first start-up my computer, everything runs as normal. Temp and activity are at reasonable levels, but as soon as I launch a game or something, it shoots up to the levels stated in the original post. Even when I close the game, the levels remain. In msi afterburner, if I adjust the power limit at all, the activity goes down quite a bit for a couple of seconds, but then shoots back up again. ugh.
