Hello

I have a concern , I had this old pc i was not using for couple of years , updated it but Now when there is a game like World of warcraft even on low /medium setting , the GPU starts going really high temps , 107°c , what can i do about this? is my gpu dying or how to troubleshoot this?

Edit: When temps go up the Fan spins are 4000ish range RPM ... very notable speed change , sounds like a car being reved .
Temps are around 55°c on idle use , but as soon as i start playing the game it shoots up to (fluctuate between 70°c and 107°c)...

On HWMoniter , there is this PCIe PEX error recover , and the counter after a reset and an hour use is at 500..

I play on 1080p . Bellow are my spec ,

Case: BitFenix Shinobi Midi-Tower
MB : ASUS Z87-A, Intel Z87 Mainboard - Sockel 1150
CPU :Intel Core i5-4670K 3,4 GHz (Haswell) Sockel 1150 - boxed
GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER
RAM: Avexir Core Series blue LED, DDR3-1600, CL9 - 8 GB Kit
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo CPU
SSD: Samsung 840 Series 2,5 Zoll, SATA 6G - 120GB
HDD: Western Digital Blue, SATA 6G, 3,5 Zoll - 1 TB
PSU: XFX Core Edition PRO Netzteil - 550 Watt
Monitor: ASUS VS239HR, 58,4 cm (23 Zoll) - HDMI, DVI, VGA

What did you update in your platform?

the GPU starts going really high temps , 107°c ,

Take the side panel off the case and aim a fan at the innards and if the temps go down, then your case is the problem.

You forgot to mention the make, model and age of your PSU.

hello

any way i can check it without opening the Case? All i remember is XFX 550w was the model , from back in 2013ish

I have a 970 Strix , would replacing to that downgrade me a lot?

here is what HWMonitor is showing...

Apologies for this but Does anyone know any way i could check what is the issue for GPU temps being so high?

I have tried to keep the side panel off and it lowers the temps by like 5°c so i do not believe the case is causing fans to spin at 4000 and spikes of temps.

-Case airflow. You already did this one.
-Dust. Clean hardware regularly.
-Thermal paste. It doesn't last forever; if kept long enough, repaste is inevitable.
-A combo of the above.

5C drop is JUST ENOUGH for case airflow to be considered an issue.
The hot spot is approaching the 110C limit, that's why the fans are going wild.

What's the exact 1660 Super model?

The max RPM is happening because the GPU is running too hot and it's trying to cool it down. If the side of your case being off doesn't fix this behavior then chances are pretty high that your issue is thermal paste/pad related on the video card. Resolving this requires taking it apart, cleaning off what's there and then putting on new paste and pads.

Re-pasting / new thermal pads may help but 1660 Super runs hot from what I've seen. PCIe errors might just be bus retraining when changing power states, no need to worry in that case.

Can i use the same thermal paste as i do for CPU ? i have never opened a gpu before so its gonna be a risky operation.
Yes you can, but it's best if you have something to spread it. I used a plastic spatula intended to to just that the last time I took apart a video card. You'll also want to make sure you have appropriate pads or putty for power and VRAM in case the pads need replacement.

Would it be wiser to try use my old 970 Trix instead of trying to open up my 1660 super , how much of a performance difference would that be ? my Strix 970 is actually twice as big / heavy . Since i don't have putty i am thinking of not risking opening the gpu.

I replaced a 970 with a 1660 Ti (barely faster than the Super) because it was about twice the performance. What's the exact model of 1660 Super that you have?

Opening up the card is rarely going to be a big deal and when I opened up my 1660 Ti I was able to reuse the pads, but it was also very new and wasn't having thermal issues. Generally speaking unless you're overclocking pads will be the way to go just because they're cheaper and easy to deal with you just have to know the right thickness to buy.

Its Asus Tuf Gaming 1660 Super , where do i find the pads incase i need them? can i buy them online?

If that matches your card those thicknesses should be correct. Arctic, Thermalright, Thermal Grizzly, and Gelid are the brands I'd trust and they should be available online. I know Arctic doesn't sell anything above 1.5mm, but they advertise that theirs can be stacked to makeup the difference. Theirs are also quite soft so this might be the best way to go if they are available.

edit: most pads can be trimmed as needed

I replaced the Thermal paste but for now i am using same pads till and will be buying new on soon , Will see how temps handle for now also.

I dunno if i done something wrong , The temps seem to be stable , max was 80 but as soon as i open WoW , my game takes ages to load , and couple of times it closed the game beofre it could load , and Ingame my Fps drop to 1 , very stutter / laggy .

I will link the spec bellow , I had 16gb ran (4x4gb) but i found out of of the Ram stick was faulty so i removed 2 sticks and am using 8gb (2x4gb) , Could that be the cause of low fps? the ram sticks were 2 different pairs ,

Ram speed is 1600Mhz DDR3 , should i consider adding more Ram?
