I have 2 modems: a DrayTek Vigor2710ne that serves as modem and a 2WIRE 2701 that I want to use to expand the WiFi coverage. I found these great and simple instructions about how to configure the 2WIRE 2710 in bridge mode. http://www.dslreports.com/faq/15835

The 2WIRE is plugged LAN1-to-LAN1 with the DrayTek. Now, I'm getting very high latency and internet is very unstable! (testing with pingtest.net)

Internet works perfectly if I disconnect the 2nd router.

Configuration matches the instructions.

What could be causing this high latency problem and how can I fix it?

DHCP server cannot be deactivated on this modem so the bridge mode is the only option from what I read, and it should work.

(configuration windows are in Spanish)

The instructions that you linked are how to use the 2Wire as a modem and attach a different router to it, not how to use it as an access point.

To use it the way you describe that you want follow the instructions near the bottom of THIS under "Configure this modem as wireless access point."

It is an old wireless G though, and I would recommend spending $25 or so and getting a newer N or even dual band N router to use as an access point.

OK I upgraded the firmware, configured WiFi access, set VPI/VCI to 0 and 35.

I have set the main modem's IP address to 192.168.1.1 and the 2WIRE to 192.168.1.254. They are connected LAN1-to-LAN1.

I have disabled DHCP on the 2WIRE.

Reboted the main modem, then the 2WIRE.

I can connect to it... but I can't get the 2WIRE to recognize the internet connection.

What am I missing?

It mentions I shouldn't be able to access the modem after disabling DHCP, but typing 192.168.1.254 still gives me access to it.

I have configured the DNS to 192.168.1.1 and set "RFC 1483 Transparent Bridging" as they said at the end.

Now I cannot access 192.168.1.254 as they said.

However... still no internet connection 🙁 Couldn't find other gateway settings.

You set up some kind of bridge on the 2WIRE?

No, you cannot do that -- you need to stop just before that. Look closely and you will see that step is under a section entitled Bridge Mode, that you do not want.

This is the last sentence in the AP instructions:

"Once this completed, you should be able to use this wireless access point. If you ever have to access this wireless access point all you have to do is change your network adapters IP address and connect directly to this access point."

I wasn't able to connect back to the router so I have simply reset it.

This time it's working. It seems the problem last time (before I turned it into bridge mode) was the way I reconfigured the IP address. Now I didn't touch the IP address and it works.

Thanks!

There is still some issue with the router. The computer freezes now and then for about 10-20 seconds. If I change the computer configuration to use Google's DNS servers, then the WiFi doesn't freeze the browser, but the connection still becomes unavailable on a regular basis for about 10-20 seconds. But at least it doesn't jam the whole computer.

Is there a way to know what is causing this?
