When playing online my ping jumps from about 20 up to 1000+ stays there for a few seconds and drops back, I also bounce back and forth whilst running and repeat actions like reloading and changing weapons.

How do I fix this? Thanks!

Actually, run a Speedtest and post the score you get from them.

If you don't know where to find it - http://speedtest.net/

Just Ping Sydney. (Deducting, since you get a ping of 20 with BF3, and are in Australia according to you're profile/Got BF3 buddies in Sydney.)

Btw, if you're with Telstra, their network is not the greatest. Atleast not in Perth. 2 of my friends are connected with them and used to routinely get a bad connection for 3 and good for 5.

Telstra Support told us to use Internet Explorer (facepalm) 😛
I had the same bleeding problem. It was so messed, my ping was a constant 100, but I was still getting the Disconected Sign.
Anyway,
Make sure no one is downloading or using all the bandwith of you're internet (Although Doubt that, as it wouldnt be jumping).
2nd, Reset you're modem. Turn it off for 30 seconds, then switch it back on. Do the same for you're router, if you want to.
3rd, Restart the BF3 game you're playing. I did this and I stopped getting stupid Lag Spikes, from the next game I joined.
4th, Call you're ISP and swear at them for a substandard Service 😛 (jokes about swearing if you cant get sarcasm 😛, But still call and ask what's up.)

It's ADSL and I connect to the modem router wirelessly, I know wireless isn't the best for gaming but it's the only way.

No one but me is using the internet and I've tried all of that except calling my ISP, what should I ask them?

I've read about port forwarding, would that be a solution to my problem?

What you talk about sounds exactly what a poor wireless signal will do. Try to test with wired or at least use the wireless next the router. when you have a poor wireless signal or interference it is fine when it is transmitting small amounts of data because there is plenty of bandwidth to retransmit when errors occur and there is less overall data to get errors on when you increase the bandwidth the problem get worse very quickly because now you have large main data that can get corrupted as well as the retransmissions getting corrupted and they too needed to be retransmitted.

But I've never had a problem playing games online on my PS3 and that's a wireless connection. I've tried it with a wired connection twice, the first time I think it was stable and the second time I couldn't connect to any servers.

Yes I'm from Sydney and I'm with TPG.

Here's the speedtest result.

So is getting a wired connection my only option to solve this? I really want to know before I spend money getting a phone socket installed in the room with my computer.
