[SOLVED] High Ping in speedtest

Solution
If you went from 10ms to 90ms something changed.

  1. Are you downloading or uploading anything while testing?
  2. Are you certain you're testing your ping to the same server/ip address?
  3. Are the traceroute numbers consistent at each hop and increasing towards destination? you can do geoip look ups and map out the course. the lookup isn't always correct, but sometimes you can figure out that your route goes way in the wrong direction.
  4. Can you reproduce the low ping in any scenario?
  5. Have you tested while only on the modem? If you get the isp to come out that's what they are going to do and many will bill you for the trip if it's working. their acceptable latency might not be what yours is either.

And a tracert to whatever server should show a 'ping' of <1ms to your router.
If that is so, anything beyond that is out of your control.
A ping of greater than 1ms to your router indicates an issue that you might be able to fix.
I did a trace route to google.com and it shows on hop 2 is when the ping spikes up.

This site is a best case but you can get a general idea of what it should be closer to. If you're getting 90ms to your own area something is wrong.

ISP pay for routes so if your isp is cutting corners hard call another and see if they can do better. yours might take you serious if you cancel.
