For the last few days I've been having problems with my home network with slow page loads and streaming video. Online gaming is completely impossible. This happens at all times of day and with every machine on the network, wired and wireless. Pinging websites like Google or Yahoo yields latencies on the order of 500ms. However when pinging the router, the response time is usually 1ms or lower.

I tried plugging my cable modem right into my laptop and got good response times (around 15-20ms) so that rules out my ISP. I don't think it's a malware issue since I got good speeds when plugged directly into the modem and the same issue affects the whole network. I'm thinking it's gotta be the router.

I get decent latencies for about a minute after I reboot the router and then it's back up to 500ms-ish. I tried turning off the firewall and the problem still persists. QoS is disabled. Firmware is up to date and set to auto update. Maybe it was a bad firmware update.

The router is a Linksys EA6400. Firmware version is 1.1.40.160989

I doubt it's the firmware because if it didn't update correctly, you probably wouldn't be using it at all. Maybe try changing your wifi channel if you haven't already tried that one. If you are on channel 6, it's usually the most congested channel to use because it's normally the default channel and no one bothers to change it. Also, if you have a setting in your router to set to auto reboot, set it to reboot every night when no one is going to be on your network. I set mine to 4a.m. every morning.

I doubt it's the wifi channel as the computers connected by cables also get garbage latency as well. I don't see an auto-reboot setting. Even rebooting manually only gets me maybe 60 seconds of decent speed then it's back to high latency again.

The channel can still have an affect on wired speeds when you have other things going through your wifi like phones, other pc's, printers or just everyday household items using the same signal. It can bog down your speeds on both sides. Either way it won't hurt to change the channel. It may help, it may not. I have a linksys router, but I use DD-WRT firmware instead of the default firmware. Maybe look into switching your firmware to that or Tomato firmware because they have much better options to optimize your router. It's pretty easy to do, but can brick your router if you screw up.
