Hi,

It's been a while since I last built a PC, but I'm looking to put together a home server to host a few virtual machines.

I've previously used old Dell desktops, but I have a stack of memory I'd like to make use of:

10 x 8GB (2Rx4 PC3 10600R)
2 x 16GB (2Rx4 PC3L-12800R)
2 x 4GB (2Rx4 PC2 5300F)

What are my options for putting together a high-RAM PC/server to give me well over 64GB?

Any pointers greatly appreciated, Googling for this sort of thing is driving me nuts.

Thanks,
Rob

Why do you need a "high-RAM" server?

You base resources on expected demand. A server with over a million hits per month can function perfectly fine on 2 GB RAM

I'm running an Apache2 server with about 20 VM's on 3 GB RAM with over a million hits per month (not heavy traffic, but a reasonable amount).
Linux server anyway...I don't run Wndows servers

One 4GB RAM stick will do just fine depending on what you're serving.
Now...IF....you're running a server with LOTS of videos and pictures being served then maybe you need more.

Are you serving a lot of video content?

[strike]Sorry forgot to mention[/strike] oh no I did, it's to host several linux vms 4-8GB each - not worried about CPU so much, and also have a couple of large SSDs to mirror for storage.

Ok, that's quite a setup you're building there.
