High RPM CPU Fan

Lately my cpu fan is running over 4000 rpm constantly even when idle just in the bios after shutdown.

I haven't made any changes to anything here the pc is completely stock and never fiddled with the fan settings they run on standard in the bios up until this point the fan was silent now it's just loud all the damn time.

The pc is 7 months old and as you can see by the hwmonitor it's running very cool I almost never run at 100F my normal temps are between 80-90F 99% of the time.

I went into the bios, Right now it's running on Standard, I changed it to silent and fan stayed at 4k, Changed it to turbo and fan still was at 4k, changed it to full speed fan remained at 4k and finally I set it to manual and dropped it all to bare minimum and fan still stayed at 4k, Nothing seems to work in the bios as far as fan control goes.

Up until this week highest I've run is 3-3.5k and that was at 95F, It's never run 4k before and I've done nothing to the computer for it to just run 4k all the time, took the sink and fan off, dusted it out etc but still stays at 4k.

When I shutdown and leave it off for about 20 mins and turn it on it starts up at 400rpm and steadily increases to 4k rpm even if the temp doesn't change.

I've even reset the bios to no avail

Well shut it all down and turned it back on went into the bios temp rose to 107F and fan stayed at 2598 rpm constant for 15 mins, Soon as I went into windows the fan jumped to 4090-4115 doesn't go any lower even though the temp dropped to 82F now.

Shut it down yet again and booted back up.

So I put the fan back from bare min setting to standard now the cpu is at 104F and the fan is running 2500 rpm constant.

Not sure wth is going on here. but this is about what the fan was running at normally before it suddenly went to 4k all the time.

Suddenly it's jumped to 4017 RPM now CPU temp wwas still 104F when this happened, CPU is back down to 90F now but the fan remains at 4041RPM

Yes I've already gone into the bios and Qfan settings.

I've used every single fan profile listed and even manual setting and dropped it all the bare minimum it would go and the fan never changes from 4115 RPM's

It's a stock cpu fan that came with the PC, It's a 3 pin connector on a 4 pin so there's no pwm control as far as I read online which probably explains why I can't control it via BIOS settings.

Regardless of that it doesn't explain how the fan has been running in the Standard option for 7 months untouched and all of the sudden it spikes to 4000 RPM's constantly.

I just ran ASUS Fan Xpert and its telling me the min speed is 4066 / max speed 4090, Also changing the profile in that doesn't do anything at all.

this is a shot in the dark, but if by any chance you have ASUS's AI Suite 3 installed, try un-installing - it will cause conflicts in the BIOS. This has been a common complaint for at least 4 years - it's one of the reasons i quit using ASUS boards - they offer nice features but their BIOSes always seem half baked when they push them out, then update them 2 weeks later.

After un-installing, ASUS actually has an AI Suite 3 cleaner utility to finish the job, and it has to be run in Safe Mode

@Ralph I actually just installed the AI suite 2 hours ago, Had these problems long before then.

But I will uninstall now as I just powered my system back up and got a fan error the fan was only doing 80 rpm's, took about 3 mins and it's back upto 2000 rpm now.

Can you disable Q-Fan?Type in start power manager and edit your current plan, under advanced options it should pop up many things, and select processor power managment and check system cooling policy on active or passive, vice versa.

Explanation :"In short: when active the fan speed on your laptop will constantly work and cool your laptop. on passive it doesn't work unless the temp is too high and it's forced to cool down the PC. Except a bit more noise, I think active is the best choice"

I can about to step out on some errands, though ever since that fan error on powering up my tower the rpm has yet to reach 3000, it's staying atm at 2000-2300 and by now it's usually at 4000.

So maybe it's fixed itself I do not know, I will try those steps you posted when I return.

Right.

Started up the pc 30 mins ago got a fan error on boot, Fan wasn't spinning at all, Watched the bios soon as it hit 114F the fan spun up and it's been bouncing between 2100-2295 RPM's since and the temp has dropped to 84F now and it's still running at 2100ish RPM's that's before I switched off Qfan, I put the system cooling from active to passive.

Well keep an eye on it but so far so good nice and quiet now.

But I am wondering since it didn't spin up on boot (first time it's done that) if it took some damage running on full speed 4k rpm's the last few days.

Also speedfan doesn't work for me, I downloaded it the other day doesn't show any of my system info aside from my hdd, gives me errors.

Yes got the same error.

Under the configure tab every tab is empty so nothing to choose, Only info this shows is under the S.M.A.R.T tab which is just hard drive info everything else is blank

Also note my buddy told me to pull up msinfo and I have and it's totally blank says cannot collect information

Cannot access the windows management instrumentation software. Windows management files may be moved or missing, Maybe that has something to do with the speedfan not working
