Higher resolution performance impact?

Hi. I am thinking about buying a new monitor. My current one is running at a resolution of 1280x768. I am considering buying either a 900p monitor(1600x900) or another 720p monitor(1366x768). I am wondering how much of a performance hit I will take while gaming if I go with the higher resolution one. I have the radeon r7 250 1gb gddr5 oc msi edition, and that is why I am worrying about performance loss. By my calculations, the 900p monitor has 1.37x more pixels.
the 900p monitor is 20 inches, at a pixel density of 91.79.
the 720p monitor is 18.5 inches, at a pixel density of 84.71.
They are also the same price, if that matters. Of course, I am leaning for the 900p one because it is better in every way, but I just want to know how much of a performance hit I am going to take if I get it. Thank you!

Wow. Really? Of course i would play at 1080p, if i could! I am not trying to be rude, but I am very limited on my options, and i can't just get new hardware out of the blue. If i could, why would I be posting this? I chose these two monitors because they are both $100, and i am scared my low end gpu will lag on 1080p, for example.

At 1280x768 your CPU is almost certainly your limiting factor, your GPU would do reasonably well at 1920x1080 and will do quite well at 1600x900. The 1600x900 screen has 46% more pixels so you would expect about 68% the performance at that resolution, BUT since your GPU almost certainly isn't your limiting factor right now, regardless of what CPU you have, the performance hit will be much smaller and you can adjust the settings a bit to compensate.

1. You can find monitors that run at 1080p for between $100-$120

2. You system should be able to handle that. What are the rest of your specs?

New games, and I will play them at medium+ settings. Thanks, but these are my only two options. I live in canada, too, where everything is more expensive.

Specs: 10gigs of ram( 2 4's and a 2), amd quad core 3.5ghz processor, msi 7778 mobo.
I havent tested my system with many games, but i can tell you that it runs battlefield 3 in between high and ultra(720p) without oc'ing, at a very good fps. I am not willing to go below medium settings. Also, 68% of my current performance seems a bit much too much for me.

I doubt you would have to go below medium with your PC if you upgraded to a 1080p monitor. In the end it's your choice. If you don't want to make the jump that's your call but you'll have to join us all in the 21st Century eventually 😉

Thanks everyone. 900p is enough for me, for now. It's more the money than anything else, as much as it pains me to admit it. I had those two options originally because I have a gift card to that store, so ultimately either one will cost 70$ CAD. Don't wait for me in the 21st century, i'll be there in no time.
