Thank you Andrew Plotkin, by the way, for the early Christmas present. 🙂

I haven't quite gotten to the endgame that others have asked about... my
questions involve two of the masks, the Orrery, the area behind the iron
lock and a tricky area to reach in the cistern.

Spoiler space begins...

How do I get the blue mask (resting on the machine in the Orrery)?

How do I get the green mask (across the river in the caverns)?

How can I reach the cord in the Orrery that dangles just out of reach?

How can I get to the end of the iron tunnel?

How can I get the gauze that's on the brass grate at the far end of the
glass catwalk?

From your other question, you've already done part of it. Consider
(or re-consider) the geometry of the machine and the solution should
become apparent.

>How can I reach the cord in the Orrery that dangles just out of reach?

I was only able to do this in expert mode (bug? Error on my part?)

>How can I get the gauze that's on the brass grate at the far end of the

Oh, so there IS another clue for that puzzle! (this is not a
hint, at least not for your question)

One of your answers reminded me that I neglected to mention that I'm playing
Dreamhold on expert mode, in case that makes a difference for the puzzles
I'm stuck on at the moment.

I could get it in non-expert mode.

Hard to give a clue though. You can't get it while hanging from
the ring, but hanging from the ring will help you get to a place
from where you can get the cord. Or something.

Gotta go up before you can go down.

Think freezing.

Gotta go down before you can go up again, having gone up already.

You need to do other stuff; when you've done it, this becomes clear.

You don't need it.

Mine:

-- I think I need a lead key. Where?

-- I think I need something to wrap around my arm. Where?

My thanks also to Andrew Plotkin; I think it is just right for it's
intended purpose, and a bunch of fun to play. Just one suggestion FWIW:
Maybe the back story could be fleshed out a little with some further
discoveries or whatever. I had to do trial & error on the mask
sequence, more than I think should have had to.

Very subjective, but I found some of the writing maybe just a tad
overwrought. In particular: "A dreamhold is more than merely
dangerous." What does it mean?

Funny - I found that sentence (and most of the writing) to be
understated rather than overwrought. (Not trying to dispute a point
of taste, really, just reacting to your choice of words).

>What does it mean?

My interpretation: a dreamhold is not just what you'd normally
call "dangerous", it's so weird and *dangerous* that just calling it
"dangerous" trivializes it. Sort of like calling an extremely beautiful
painting "pretty" would trivialize it, or saying that Mahler's 8th
symphony "has a lot of catchy tunes" trivializes it.

My interpretation: there is danger, but there is more here than just danger.
There are also rewards to be had for people who brave the dangers and
succeed. To me, this interpretation explains why the PC finds himself
unafraid when he realizes that he is in a dreamhold.

Thanks to the helpful hinting, I've got the blue and green masks now. But
the cord is still eluding me. It sounds as though I need to get to the blue
globe as a stepping stone to get to the hanging cord, but nothing that I've
tried from there so far has gotten me where I want to go. The green globe
evades me every time, and picking up the tan globe again when it passes
below the blue globe doesn't seem to help either. I need a little more
prodding for this one...

Also, I was hoping that obtaining all seven masks would lead to enough of my
memory coming back together that I'd know what I need to do next to move the
story along, but that didn't happen. Unless there's a plot point waiting
for me on that elusive cord, it looks like I'll be stuck not knowing what to
do next. Can anyone give a gentle hint towards what my next goal should be
once I have the seven masks?

Perhaps a little reflection would help.

There be Spoilers Below...

I'm also stuck at this precise point. Do I need something to grab the
green globe? Or is this the wrong idea?

Further spoilers...

I've seen three endings so far:
1) Dying in the pit
2) Restoring my memories by doing the right things with all the masks
and the fragment (bit of a disappointment, that one...)
3) Re-drawing the portal

I still have no idea about the following:

The birds in the mosaic.
The apple - is opening the cage a good idea?
The harp room - can I open the door, and can I do anything when the
room is transformed?
The arboretum - can I do anything in the jungle?
The lead door - is there a key?

Yeah, I got stuck on the same two things. I have tried every possible thing
in the orrery sequence. It's a little frustrating that the game doesn't
allow "jump onto". As for the masks, I imagine you have to sit in the chair
and wear them all in the correct order. But the order that I guessed doesn't
seem to work, and I don't have time to try 6! combinations.

You're only half right about what you need to do with the masks, I
think.

I also missed whatever the clue was to the correct order, but it's
possible to work out what it is with a bit of experimentation in far
less than 6! attempts (though it did take me quite a few).
Admittedly I had had a bit of a nudge from some of the other hints
posted round here, though, so that probably helped shorten the
process a bit.

I think it's the right idea (at least, that's how I got the cord in
non-Expert mode). You can get to the green globe using the power of
gravity.

These appear to be red herrings to me, though they might have
some symbolic significance. I also haven't found any use for the
black and white crumpled paper.

In expert mode I was able to grab the green globe. In regular mode I
was not. I tried with and without the glove, in case that mattered.

I've tried that - going down at the right moment when I'm hanging from
the tan moon gets me to the blue globe, but going down from the blue
globe only dumps me on the floor.

So I suppose either my timing's off or I'm missing something else.
Anyway, I'm still stuck.

I guess that's what it's supposed to mean, but it doesn't work: as far
as I can see, the dreamhold isn't dangerous at all. Apart from that,
the "not merely dangerous" construction seems to me to be just lazy. If
the intention is something like "dangerous, of course, but more
importantly, X" then (for me) it just leaves "X" hanging in a nebulous
cloud of Lovecraftian puffery.

Better, IMO, just to leave it out & let the action generate the mood.
And if there isn't actually any particular danger, then don't try to
force the mood to suggest that there might be.

I believe one intended solution is simply to put the memories in narrative
order, from earliest memory to latest.

I solved the puzzle by realizing that a mask doesn't fit only if you've skipped
that
particular mask in the order. The actual order was pretty easy to puzzle out
from there.

Are you sure the green globe is directly underneath the blue globe?

The green globe, carried on the copper wheel's rotation, is swinging
past you."

It's possible that this puzzle is different in expert mode, though.

In expert mode, you can pick up a key. I don't know about tutorial mode.

Now I get the impression that all the things that appear to be red herrings
in expert mode (apple, birds, harp, etc) may have a purpose in tutorial
mode.

Well, that clue about being half right was enough to get it for me. Once I
put the masks in the right place, 6! tries is obviously not necessary. It
actually only took me 2 tries, since I only guessed 1 mask wrong the first
time.

So now I've seen at least 2 endings. Also, one time the harp room changed
into something else, but I still haven't figured out the trigger condition
(or anything useful to do in the changed room). Still no success in trying
to pull the cord, and I haven't figured out anything useful to do in "west
catwalk; ethreal".

I had a bit of a problem with that, actually - to me, the narrative
order wasn't quite obvious, so I had to resort to some trial and
error.

Yes - but the puzzle mechanics require undoing when you realize that a
mask doesn't fit, and if you haven't got an interpreter that supports
multiple undo you have to restore from a save file. That makes the
puzzle unnecessarily cruel for a game aimed at beginners, IMHO. Or
am I missing something?

OK, that worked. My timing was off - probably I tried when the copper
wheel was below me but the green globe wasn't.

Thanks!

Well, the key is lying on the edge of the tub in tutorial mode as
well, but I meant if I can do anything in the jungle that the room
transforms into.

Has anybody been able to find a key to the lead door, by the way?

I seem to need a few more things to be able to emulate the figure in
the mural - or is that also a red herring?

Really? I'm playing in tutorial mode and haven't found a purpose to
any of those things. Maybe I'm just being dense.

Color sequence: Try looking at the palette through the easel.

In expert mode, the key is in the jungle, not in the pot.

Doesn't seem like it.

Which mural... You mean the mosaic?

I mean that maybe they just have a purpose in the tutorial. Like the apple
helps the tutorial voice explain the undo command.

I have now succeeded in getting the strip in both tutorial mode and expert
mode using the technique mentioned elsewhere in this thread. I don't really
understand what the pattern is... sometimes it works and sometimes it
doesn't. I swear I should have found this by myself, since I tried typing
"d, undo, z" in a loop for about 20-30 iterations last night. The belt
didn't help anyway. I thought it would let me enter the tan moon, but it
didn't.
