Hitachi CML174SXW ?faulty -- help required please!

Hi and sorry for being a new member posting a request for urgent help. Based largely on the review and the community opinions here I have just bought a CML174 TFT. It seems to be a great screen and the review right on the money. However mine has an unusual problem - in the middle of the top left quarter of the screen there is an area that looks unusually pale when viewed from the left side (only) with the screen displaying a black or dark desktop (only) - its not visible from dead on centre or when the screen is bright. If you look really up close there are some very fine green speckles irregularly over the screen visible in this area also. They are not dead pixels and i dont "think" this is simply a factor of viewing angle as its noteable even if youre only 5 or 10 degrees off to the left, at any height above, below, or level. I'm not sure if I have a faulty unit (in which case I only have 4 days left to RMA it!) or whether this is an inherent limitation of the new TFT technology - which i understand is less forgiving of viewing angle than the previous generation...

So ... faulty unit or technology limitation? All replies hugely gratefully accepted and I only have 4 days left to decide whether to send it back or not - if they're all like this Im more than happy to keep this unit. Mucho Thanks. Peter

If you notice a defect and not happy, return it. Best bet might be is to buy it at a store and view it before buying.

I have seen three of them (including the one I'm sitting in front of now). There seems to be some sort of irregularity for sure. Only on black screen...I see silver with some patchy black. If you sit dead on...gone! Overall...on 99% of all the backgrounds I stare at daily...it's fine. On the black screen during bootup...If I stand off to an angle...I see the pattern. I have seen it worse on some other screens. I really am beginning to believe it is part of the panel structure. If it really bothers you...I'd return it. In my case, the monitor is stellar when encoding home movies to mp2 and burning DVD. It really functions well for multimedia and games. Overall...even when doing word processing, etc...it's good. I know what you see

As I said...the brightness on this monitor is twice that of any other I have seen. The panel itself is TN...and the sensitivity is perhaps why we see what we do. However, with that said...I have never found another panel that even rivals the color of the CM174. It's sharp and everything it is supposed to be. Glad you're pleased.

I have just bought the Hitach and get the same effect you describe. I think it is down to viewing angles. Incidently are you viewing in artificial light? On mine this problem does not occur in daylight (no lights switched on!)

Yes, artificial light really accentuates that issue. In natural daylight...PERFECT! No patterns, nothing. I spend about 10 hours a day in front of this monitor...during the day and a couple of hours at night. Based in my utilization of apps and programs..I rarely see the patterns...but the monitor itself, is worth it!
