Hitachi hard drive slow Read & Write

So basically, I've noticed my system is slowing down, especially at start up. The PC is pretty new, between 1 and 2 years old. Not too long ago I installed my Samsung 840 EVO and was amazed by the quick startup and shutdown times. However, these times have drastically increased now. Also, finishing the startup takes way longer than normal. The desktop icons only load after 1 or 2 minutes, and my virus scanner takes way longer to start.
I'm thinking my 6 years old HDD is dying. Rolling benchmarks test with Samsung Magician tells me the following:
Sequential read: 56
Sequential write: 68
Random read: 183
Random write: 429
Now to me, these seem way too low. Could it be that my HDD is simply dying?

System specs:
Windows 8.1
Hitachi HDT721010SLA360 HDD 1TB
Samsung 840 EVO 250GB
AMD FX-8320 @3.5Ghz CPU
ASRock 970 Extreme3 R2.0
Seasonic S12II-Bronze 430W

Thanks a lot!

Hi, SirTim.

I guess your OS is on the SSD, right? I'd recommend that you disconnect the HDD to see if your system is still slower than usual. Often when there's a failing HDD it might affect the performance of your SSD. I'd also suggest that you backup your important data, just in case and then download the HDD manufacturer's diagnostic tool (or a 3rd party one if the manufacturer doesn't offer such a tool), to test the drive and see if any errors or bad sectors pop-up.

Hope that helps. Please let me know what are the results of the tests. And don't forget to backup, before you start trying things out.

Hiya Boogieman,

That's right, it is.
Whenever I have the time I'll try this out, see if it truly is my HDD. I hope so, because if not it would mean I overused my SSD in which case I would need to reinstall Windows to make things fast again.
Thanks for the reply and stay tuned, I'll keep you updated.

Still didn't find the time to test out what you told me. Thought it would good to give you an update, tell you I am still very much alive.
I'll keep this post open, but I'm not expecting to be able to test it out any soon. Just keep an eye on your notifications! 😀

Thanks again for the help
