I bought a Dell Latitude refurb which came with a hts723232a7a364 hdd. Several months/years later I've recently bought a bx100 ssd and managed (it was not straight forward) to install windows 7 and then upgrade to windows 10 pro. The ssd and OS all runs fine. it's a latitude E6220 with the latest BIOS from Dell, btw.
My intention was to use the old 320GB hdd as a backup disk, in an enclosure. FYI this machine uses a 90deg sata foxconn? adapter because it's a small laptop, space it tight and the hdd/sdd slots in.
ANYWAY, this hitachi disk does not work in an enclosure I bought, nor does it work in a novatech 2.5/3.5 hdd/sdd dock. I have tried the ssd in that dock and it worked. When I say work I mean, plug it in, and you can access the disk in explorer.
This disk does not appear in disk manager either.
However, remove the ssd, put the hdd back in and it boots fine! as if nothing is wrong with it. WHY on earth doesn't my laptop pick it up? I tried the enclosure on three other machines with the same result but I've only tried the dock on the laptop and a desktop I have access to. Same result. On the desktop it does show up as unallocated space in the disk manager however any attempt to initialise disk results in i/o error.
I thought maybe it was because of the system partition, so I transfered the boot files to the windows partition and deleted the system partition and extended the windows partition ergo just one partition with all the space on the disk. Still does not show up in explorer.
I've ruled out the laptop hardware being at fault and the sata/usb3 controller in the dock being at fault. There's something wrong with the way this hdd was set up by the refurb people and I want to get it to work as a back up disk. Please help
PS: when in the dock the activity light is continuously flashing, giving me the impression the disk is being accessed. it takes forever to safely remove... I don't know what's going on.
Both the desktop and my laptop are using Win10 pro and bitdefender free antivirus
