Hitachi internal hard drive not recognized by my compaq laptop

I got a new Hitachi 500GB hard drive for my compaq CQ50-115NR laptop and i have been having troubles with it being recognized. It will come on for about 3 minutes then shut off. I tried putting it in my wifes laptop and it does the same thing. Is there a way to fix this problem. I have been told that it needs a certain driver to recognize it as an IDE drive. But i dont know where to even begin to look for that. Any help would be great!
