1Gb/s? Sounds like marketing hype.
A 10Mbit full-duplex connection will let you transfer 1.3 megabyte of
data per second. Your harddisks *may*, if they're good and not doing
anything else, be able to write at 100MBit/s, which is also the
fastest NIC (WAN) you'll be able to find.
1 Gbit/s, if true, just translates into a shitload of unused bandwidth
unless the connection is shared between 10 to 100 computers.
