HL Platinum Edition Key Steam Mix-up...

I bought the Half-life Platinum Edition last summer, and it worked
wonderfully with the good old WON servers and their system of
authentication. I had decided to hold out on Steam and not use it
until it was more refined, but the other day I gave in to my urge and
tried to register my CS key with Steam. No dice... Steam told me that
my key (for a game purchased RETAIL) was already in use. I tried
everything, including the separate key for Half-life, but to no avail.
Wal-mart has Half-Life: GOTY for $15 right now, would the key that
ships with the GOTY edition work with my version of Counter-strike? Is
there any guarantee against this being another bogus (I'm assuming
double-printed) key?
Thanks in advance,
-Hukuis

With Steam there is no such word as 'assurance'!

Haha! That's one thing you can count on with Steam! What I'm really
asking though is will the key from the normal GOTY Edition work with my
Platinum Edition Counter-strike? I'm pretty sure that if you've
purchased a product within 40 days you can e-mail valve a scan of your
CD-ROM, your Key, and your receipt and they'll de-activate the key so
you can use it.
Thanks,

Thanks so much! I'm going to go out and buy GOTY Edition tonight. I
can't believe that Valve would implement such a remarkably flawed
authentication system. I am very unimpressed with the fact that a
piece of software I purchased for $40 (that also came with TWO keys!)
no longer functions. They had to be aware of the fact that some keys
were printed more than once! GOTY will be the last product of theirs I
buy until they fix Steam!
Thanks for all the help,
-Hukuis

The GOTY edition should work and give you access to the same set of Steam
games as your HL Platinum Edition, unless that too is another duplicate key.
Make sure GOTY is bought still in its shrink wrap at Walmart and untampered
with.
The standard set of Steam games a key like that gives you are:

CounterStrike 1.6
Team Fortress Classic
Day of Defeat
Half Life and HL dedicated server
Deathmatch Classic
Opposing Force
Ricochet
Codename Gordon

The above games should appear in you games list in Steam once you
successfully registered your new key.
The games will update automatically to the latest versions and you no longer
need your old installation of HL or any other Mods that came with it.

Try buying/registering it and see, if you're prepared to fork out another
$15. If it fails to register, take it straight back to Walmart with your
receipt and get a refund.

There are no guarantees that the key will work because there were some database
issues at valve and some valid keys don't work but you can email valve and they
will sort it out either for your platinum key or if you decide to take a chance
on the GOTY Edition and it fails then that too.

As for your installed software working with a key from a different product then
yes it will and anyway steam will replace it with 1.6.

Correction. The two items surrounded by *** are available free with Steam.
You don't need a key at all to play/use them (which is kinda useful,
considering I got two GOTY versions of HL and both keys were duplicated,
plus Vivendi never got back to me when I emailed my details to them).

Vivendi are bastards. I bought HL new a few weeks back and the cd-key
was a duplicate. So I emailed them and got no response. Took the damn
thing back to the store for a refund.

Vivendi does have an email address where you can get a new cd-key (if
you bought a new game and it doesn't work). However, they are not
checking it or responding anymore.

I was well aware of the fact that the double-printed keys are not
Valve's doing. However, it is ignorant to assume that they had no idea
it was occuring, and were completely and totally shocked by the fact
that many people who had spent their hard-earned money on Valve games
would be unable to play them. Vivendi, however, had nothing to do with
the deployment of Steam. It was not Vivendi's decision to release a
product that would cause thousands of users to lose access to the
products they paid for several years before. With a game as successful
and popular as Half-Life, printing duplicate keys can become a
necessity because there are only so many keys that will work with the
program. WON addressed this issue by allowing a limited number of
users with the same key to play on their servers. Steam, however,
ignores the issue completely, only offering key re-activation for those
pieces of software purchased within 40 days of their failed activation.
This oversight might be excusable for a new product, because everyone
would be activating it soon after purchase. With an old game like the
original Half-Life however, millions of users had purchased the game
years before the release of Steam. This makes it entirely Valve's
fault for ignoring an issue that was already established as being a
problem.
