I downloaded the 760MB HL2 demo from ati.com. When downloaded and
installed, I tried to access the point "play HL2 demo" from the Steam
menu. However, all I get this error message:

"This game is currently unavailable. Please try again at a later
time."

I have tried for several days. Also, I get the same error message when
attempting to play the demo in both online and offline mode.

There is apparently no explanation on the Steam news page, nor have I
found anything in the forums.

I have tried to remove and reinstall the demo, also rebooting many times
in the process.

Do anybody know what I can do to play the demo?

I saw your post on comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.action but as the idiot difool is
spamming his Steam hatred to all and sundry, I don't really want to
encourage him any more than necessary..
What OS are you using ?
Take a look at these threads if you haven't already.

Good luck. It's worth it. Don't listen to morons like difool and co.

Try posting the problem at www.steampowered.com. I couldn't find an answer
for you but maybe someone will reply if you ask.

Did you take a look at the last link ?
http://makeashorterlink.com/?A1403212A
It has advice for making sure the correct ports are open etc.

I appreciate your help, but this specific item appears to relate to
people who cannot log into Steam. I can log into Steam, but I cannot
play the demo. So I don't think it is relevant for me.

BTW, I have tried to erase the demo from the Steam menu, and the
downloading the whole shebang via Steam. The process took several
hours, and allegedly downloaded around 3.5 G of contents. So I think
there is no problem with my internet connectivity.

(The demo still did not work, though.)

What are the rest of your system specifications ?
Graphics card, memory etc.
Perhaps the message "This game is currently unavailable. Please try again
at a later
time." is a general catch all error message for a number of related faults.
