I recently heard from someone that it is possible to download games which
would normally be about £30-£40 in the shops for free. I would like someone
to clarify this please.

There can be a few possibilities:

1) (most likely)
Some people just put up an image (on big file with all data of a game CD on
it) of the game on the net.
However, downloading and/or using these images is not to be discussed in
this newsgroup.
This kind of software is called 'warez'

2)
Sometimes it is the otherway around: some people harvest all kinds of free
games from the net and put them on a cd, and sell it in shops. Depending on
the license agreement of each game, this may or may not be legal. (Some
programmer's don't want to have their game put on a cd at all)

3)
I dunno...

Mighty Kitten-could you please point me in the direction of one of these
"warez" newsgroups which are active?

I'm not Mighty Kitten but I have heard that these days, a lot of
"warez" comes with some unwelcome payloads--viruses being the mildest
possibility.

Has been quite a time since I used ware groups....

You can of course use Kazaa or Bit Torrent to search for this kind of
software (use google to find these programs please)
You could also search for 'alt.binairies' or 'warez' within the newsgroups
aviable with your isp)
and while your googling, search for 'warez'. The old warez groups I used to
visit are long gone... (I'm getting old...)

Be advised however: If you are even thinking of downloading warez:
- be sure to have a good, up-to-date virus scanner (like AVG ->
www.grisoft.com/ )
- be prepeared to go trough hundreds of adult advertisements (or mobile
phones, they seem to be more frequent now-a-days)
- it is illegal. Though very unlikely, it is not unheard of people being
busted for just downloading this stuff. But then: it is your life.

I will not advice more on this subject, or I'll be a partner in crime, witch
I don't want to be.
Goodluck & Wisdom!

Isn't all this OFF TOPIC in this group?
