Home build upgrade advice please

Hi all

I need advice on upgrading my home build me and a friend built 2 years ago. Unfortunatly my friend who advised and helped me on the build died last year, so im lost for advice on an upgrade and could really use some pointers.

I have a NVidia 8800 ultra which im happy with but need advice on a new CPU (intel), Motherboard, RAM, fans, sound card and an extra 500gb hard drive which will be compatible with my 8800 ultra and would preferably fit into my Antec P182 Super Midi Tower Case, although i can change case if need be.

Primarily a gaming PC.

My budget limmit is £600 - $873.

Theres such a wide range of components on sale i have no clue whats best or compatible.

Any advice sugestions would be very much appreciated!

No need for a sound card with a quality MB... there are several great 500gb hard drives in the $60 range, but I prefer WD caviar black. I would also add a Coolit Domino liquid cooling to the system below for about $100...this will allow you to do some serious overclocking. I chose a less expensive MB, but you could upgrade to one in the $300 range and still stay in budget.

With the P182 and 8800Ultra you are limited to 4 hard drives, I believe.

The WD6401AALS (WD Caviar Black 640GB) is the most popular hard drive these days AFAIK, and it deserves it.

I agree with all your points above, except the liquid cooling system/overclocking. He said "i have no clue whats best or compatible", and I think attempting to overclock would be dangerous for him. Without overclocking, the stock cooler will be just fine.

Now, if you're REALLY nice, give him some links to www.overclockers.co.uk or www.scan.co.uk. His budget is in British pounds, and Newegg doesn't ship to the UK.

I missed the part about fans. You don't need to buy extra fans just because you're replacing some Core 2/P45/DDR2 setup (or whatever you have now) with an i7/x58/ddr3 setup. The P182 can handle all that just fine.

Sorry Shub, you know us arrogant americans...I would imagine you will have no problem finding the same items from your UK discounters well under your budget. And aevm is correct, that if you are running stock speeds the stock cooling will be fine, and that will save you even more.

Oh... the only thing i forgot to ask was what wattage power supply would i require to easily run this system?

Something like Corsair 650W should be plenty.

If you're planning to add a second video card, I'd recommend the Corsair 750W.

Edit: why the Corsair 650W and not some other 650W PSU:

1. because you need extra long cables for the P182, and the Corsair has them; other models may not have them
2. because there are plenty of models claiming 650W but not many can deliver 52A, like the Corsair.
