Hi Need some advise for a home server using an Xeon Server with capacity to increase drive space as much as needed. Main OS will be on SSD.
Sick Beard Couchpotato Plex usenet - need advise on best, free if possible of cheap Torrent NAS
I have a kodi box which i use for streaming and will use this to stream from my above home server.
I will also need a blu-ray writer reader to rip my home blu-rays to the server. Also thinking of putting in a TV Card to record live TV and provide DVR function to my Kodi box. So idea on best CPU, thinking E5-2670 with 8 cores, had thought if a m/b with 2 cpu ability...ECC memory might also be useful.... The server to will be for file, doc, pics, home video movies etc and will need to setup ability with backup. Your help on this will be very useful

It's also better to use a wired connection generally. There's less variance in performance. A gigabit network speed is good enough to stream raw bluray in my environment. I've been using a NUC, xbox 360 and a small Zotac as clients and they work great. I use the iPad on WIFI to stream flawlessly also
Why do you want a Xeon?
What do you need a torrent NAS for?
What kind of Live TV?

I suggest a windows 2016 server using a small ITX Lian Li case that supports 8 3.5" drives (many of them support 5 and have room for 3 more)
I'd then buy a highpoint raid card that can handle 8 or 16 SATA drives over the x16 PCI bus. 16GB of ram and a 200-300 dollar i5 CPU from Intel

Then go buy a Ceton InfiniTV eth6 (if you want cable TV) or use Internet TV if you want the free stuff.

Use makemkv for your movie ripping and go buy an ASUS or LG writer for your PC.

You'll need to create a RAID 5 probably for your hard drive storage so you can have redundancy.

Yeah a NUC should work for clients or something similar, zotac has some good boxes too. If you can stream the media through KODI using PLEX or Emby as your server and client software, you can even use a Fire TV as the client. I've been using Emby as the media server software for about 6 years but i'm starting to switch to PLEX just to change things up. Both Emby and Plex have client software apps that run on Smart TVs, iPhones, Androids, etc.

Yea the op did not mention what clients he will stream to. I have plex with over 500 movies and shows. I have streamed up to 8 remote clients with a i7 4930k. I even have Wondershare to convert any movie I have to the most compatible formats to clients, mp4,h264, and acc audio. It streams with the Video transcoding and the audio direct stream, all in all really good compared to local (all direct play). Your biggest bottle neck will be your upload speed. Mine is 20 mbs upload which causes the media to transcode. Hope this helps.
