How the heck do you get two computers to see and exchange data on XP?????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :??: I went through the stupid wizard and I can't find any shared files or folders. Any step by step guides for dummies?????

Are you using a crossover ethernet cable or straight-thru cables via a router?

Have you turned off firewalls on both machines? Permitted sharing in the properties of the folders you want to share on the target machine ?

Supplied the correct computer name (see Control Panel, System) and path when filling in the Wizard ?

It's clunky and slow but it'll work in the end.

Not using crossover ethernet cable. Is that a better way?

No firewall on new computer. Need to verify it is off on old computer.

Permitted sharing??? Properties of which folder? The one I want data to go into?

Yes computer names are correct.

Thanks for your help!!

Crossover is simpler -- but any router with enough ethernet sockets -- plus two straight thru ethernet cables will do.

Right Click on the folder which contains the files you want to access and enable sharing.

well, he can't even see the computers on the network

1. make sure they are on the same Workgroup
2. make sure that all firewall software/antivirus is disabled
3. try sending ping requests between the computers first

"well, he can't even see the computers on the network"

I'm assuming he has a keyboard, mouse and monitor attached to the target computer and can access the folders that way.
