ok guys.... (calv and jhiggs) you know the history... i STILL, after reinstalling active dir on my server twice, can not get my xp computer to connect with any network shares in less that 10 min. the system log on the server was full with "dns operation refused" errors, and also the two i pasted below. "game-server" is the 2k server. the only system with the problem is "comp1" which is winxp pro. i have readded it to the domain 3 or 4 times. all others comps can see each other fine... what am i doing wrong?

UPDATED: i pasted the errors from the machine in question after these two, which are from the server.

t, did you check <A HREF="http://www.jsiinc.com/subk/tip5400/rh5417.htm" target="_new">this tip?</A>

<i>It's always the one thing you never suspected.</i>

also <A HREF="http://groups.google.com/groups?q=Windows+cannot+obtain+the+domain+controller+name+for+your+computer+network.+(The+specified+domain+either+does+not+exist+or+could+not+be+contacted.+).+Group+Policy+processing+aborted.&hl=en&lr=lang_en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&selm=ea7e01c18970$d5093f20$9de62ecf@tkmsftngxs01&rnum=7" target="_new">this usenet post</A> talks about a similar issue...

<i>It's always the one thing you never suspected.</i>

SWEET!!! where'd you get that???? that is EXACTLY whats been happening, but the part i get confused at is..... i am using the router and a dhcp server so my server doesnt have a dns ip... what would i use? should i look in the router config? should i give my server a static ip? if so, what?

....the crows seemed to be calling him, thought caw....

yeah, i guess the router would be the actually dns server. its just a regular home network. i just went into the router config and found the router dns server ip settings and put them in my prefered dns server settings. so you're saying i should forget that and put the router ip? 192.?.?.?

....the crows seemed to be calling him, thought caw....

hmmm.... still doesnt want to work... should i add the router dns info to the server too?

....the crows seemed to be calling him, thought caw....

couldn't hurt. All machines whether server or client should know of a DNS server if there's one available.

<i>It's always the one thing you never suspected.</i>

ok, well that didnt work. this is incredibly frustrating. let me try to show you whats going on. i have 4 computers in my network.

game-server (2k server w/active dir)
comp1 (the pain in the ass with xp pro)
comp2 (my internet computer. 2k pro)
mp3server (like the name says. 2k server w/out active dir)

sooooooo.... now heres the part thats killing me. when i sit at comp1, i cant browse network neighborhood to any of the other comps. before this, i had mapped drives and when i clicked them, i got an error saying the name was "already in use"???? so i disconnected them. anyway, i cant do anything from net neigh... yet, i can ping game-server from it. comp2 and mp3server i cannot ping. game-server, the one i CAN ping from comp1, CANNOT ping back at comp1. all the others can see each other just fine. is that weird or what....

oh yeah, from comp1 i can actually administer active directory which is on game-server!!!! aaahhhhhhh!!!!

really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really
stupid question:

Is the XP firewall enabled on comp1?

If not, can you list the IP addresses of all 4, plus whether they're static IP's or DHCP?

<i>It's always the one thing you never suspected.</i>

also, do a google groups search on <A HREF="http://groups.google.com/groups?q=The+DNS+server+was+unable+to+complete+directory+service+enumeration+of+zone+&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en" target="_new">this string</A> and check out the first few posts. The one titled "potential AD problem rooted in DNS?" has something about registry inconsistency (you didn't post the actual domain string in the error message, but the usenet post mentions providentcorp.com). Another one is interesting (titled "Windows take forever to load")

AD is highly complex (IMHO) and the interaction with DNS is probably causing your problem. I've not done enough AD to speak confidently about it.

hey jlanka.... well, IM UP AND RUNNING!!! lol... not sure what it was... maybe a combo of everything. i DID have the firewall on xp, but only for one night. i was just trying it out, but this problem has been going on for a while. one thing i did other than your dns suggestions was, when i went into the router config, i looked at the dhcp table and my old server was still listed. i deleted the entry for that. i have no idea if it did anything, but im sure it didnt hurt. ANYWAY, thanks very much for your time and the links. very helpful. hopefully i'll stay running!!!! thanks again!!
