This is what we are trying to do in our house. Because the control center box is in a small space, we had the cable modem signal get connected through the co-ax jack in the study. It is connected to a Wifi router. However, we want to get the LAN jacks in certain rooms connected too. The thought is this.

.1. Connect the LAN jack in the study using a LAN cable connected to one of the out ports of the router
  • 2. Using a network switch in the control center cabinet, connect the corresponding LAN wire for the study to the “LAN input” channel
  • 3. Connect the corresponding LAN wires for the rooms we want connected to the channels in the network switch

Does this seem feasible/doable? What specific features on a network switch should we look for? Any particular brands/types you recommend?

No need for anything you won't use. a simple unmanaged 1Gbs switch that is a newer model. new switches have low power chips, no fans, and some new low power standards.
if you can get away with 8ports those models seem to be very low cost per port.

fast ethernet = 100Mbs. Dont buy this. not sure why they still make these. people buy them by mistake and then buy 1Gbs = 2 switches sold.

you can find models that are managed for vlans (layer2+) that aren't crazy expensive when looking at 16port.
POE AT makes switches expensive.
