I have a desktop PC, dual monitors and a work laptop with docking station. My question is how can I set this up so regardless of which machine I turn on it will utilize the dual screens? I don't want to have move the monitor cables each time.
So I can plug the dual monitors, a keyboard, mouse and speakers into this kvm switch and then toggle their usage from pc to laptop? How does it connect or see the two machines?
It's a dumb switch. You just have the machines plugged into. In this case your dock and desktop. When you flick the switch it switches the connections. Just like you unplugged everything from one computer and plugged it into another
Use a KVM switch. They make KVM switches which support dual monitor or more. Then you just flip the switch. Unless you have to use VGA. Get one which is HDMI or DVI and the appropriate adapter cables.
KVM can also support USB and audio. So your peripherals and speakers also switch.
