Hi, I need a surveillance camera for my house and I'm totally clueless about this, will appreciate if you guys can answer a few basic questions.

- Is a VCR mandatory or it is possible to buy just a camera and plug it directly to the PC? I don't need recording capability.
- What brands and features should I look for? I don't need too much, it must be for exteriors and of course a decent resolution and image must be visible at night.

Thanks in advance.

No one uses VCR at all anymore, for anything.
They use NVRs, sometimes incorrectly called DVR.
Network Video Recorder or Digital Video Recorder.

You say you don't need one - but i don't see the utility of a camera that isn't recording. But, an NVR or DVR is optional and that is your choice.

What you need is called a Wireless IP camera. They are cheap, and don't require you to wire them up.
You simply get them connected to the wifi, and then you can access them from anywhere on your network.

With another step involving router configuration you can view it remotely.

The instructions that come with the camera will explain the installation process clearly.

But again, a camera that doesn't record is pretty useless in my opinion...

Any of those would do what you need.
