Home Server Build (Media/File server)

I have been interested in servers, and I'm thinking about building a homeserver to backup my gaming computer, and my laptop. I will also put media on there (Movies, Pictures, etc) on my server. I'm just wondering what's important when building the computer, the things to look for. I just need the basis of servers, their hardware, and how to set it up. I do want to do it myself, and I'm willing to research more. All suggestions will be helpful!

P.S. I'll be going to Networking (Server stuff) for college in 6 months, I just want to get ahead and I'm REALLY interested in this stuff right now.

all you need is any computer/motherboard/server and a few good raid cards and some nice disks
