I've totally confused myself in what would be the best option for storage across several devices.

I have HDMI in the HT, USB on the plasma (although it can be connected to the network), and several HDD's. When using the HDMI I use the HDD thru my laptop.

I dont have bundles of $$ to spend, but dont know if a NAS system would be the better option, or if a dedicated computer with increased capacity would be (Ideally I would like to leave the HDDs in one place)

No clue at all!!

Any suggestions on the best solution?

what does your TV support over the network? some just do internet and services (think Netflix), not media streaming. What TV model would help. If it doesn't do steaming something like a boxee box would help

I'm not too sure if the TV whether it can do services, Its a Samsung Series 6 (PS50B650).

Your TV supports DLNA. You do not need a dedicated PC if you don't mi.d leaving your desktop or laptop on and have space for the harddrives. there are also NAS boxes that support DLNA or you could build one. First though here is a guide to setting up DLNA on a windows 7 PC using media center so you can try it out.

There are of course other free DLNA server programs. On a side note your TV can use a wifi adapter in one of the USB ports(I think it has to the official one from Samsung though. not sure) if running Ethernet cable to the TV is a problem. Wired Ethernet is better for streaming though

I have a Buffalo TerraStation NAS and it works quite well. It's designed to be on all the time and draws very little power. If your looking for a simple solution on the Home theater end I would Recommend a WD TV Live Plus device. They've been designing these devices for a long time and have a nice product that will stream the popular mkv files, unlike the XBOX360.
