I am trying to make a VPN from my home network so that i can connect to it from work. Both ends are private internet connections, nothing corporate. I went through all the steps and opened the required ports (47 and 1723). I set up the VPN from a windows vista computer and am trying to connect to it from a windows 10 computer. I was able to connect to the VPN when both computers were on my home wifi but i cannot connect when my win10 machine is on any other network. What do i do?

Are you certain you are using the correct external IP address when attempting to connect to your home network?

Did you give the home PC a static IP address?

What is the make and model of your home router?

I am fairly certain of the host IP address. I was not able to make it static, when i tried the router returned an error message saying the static IP needed to be outside a certain range. The router is a router/modem in one unit supplied by comcast. Unfortunately I am currently at work so i cant provide the exact model number.

You can Google "my ip address" from home or check the address assigned to the WAN side of your modem/router if you are not absolutely certain of the external address. I'd highly recommend using a dynamic DNS service so that you do not have to remember the address or lose connection if the address changes.

You should make every effort to set a static IP address on your PC at home. Check the DHCP range of your router. The IP assigned to your PC should be outside of this range. Otherwise, it will be subject to change from your port forward rule, or may conflict with another device on your network.

Was i wrong to set up the VPN using the IP of the computer i set it up on then?

I can set a static IP when i am home again through the tcp protocol settings rather than through the router settings, however I dont know what the DHCP range is.

the guide i used to set this up in the first place is this:

Hopefully this gives an idea what ive done thus far

You need to check that your router allows vpn passthough or whatever it is called on your device. There must be a special feature to allow PPTP to pass though a router. 47 is not a port you can not forward it. 47 refers to the GRE protocol ....like tcp, udp, icmp etc. The router must have a feature that allows it to work. It does a function very similar to port forwarding but for the GRE protocol. A lot of routers have this support but many it is not enabled by default.

If you mean the IP address of the actual PC (a private address assigned by your router), then yes, that is wrong.

You need to use the public address assigned by your ISP to your router. You can find it by Googling "my ip address" or checking the WAN address on the router. In any case they must both match.

You should be able to check the router for the default DHCP range, or post make and model.
