Homemade fan filter

Solution
Hello... the price is right for try and see... At work, I hand cut foam filters, like such pictured, but about 3/16" thick, in front of computer case fans in a very dirty, oily, and metal dust enviroments... they get change monthly, and the results are fantastic... but like outlw6669 suggested... make sure it does not cut off your air flow.
Well, it will stop the dust.
It will probably also stop all but a trickle of airflow as well.

If you want to build your own, look into a fairly fine window screen or mesh.
That should stop most of the dust from entering the case while still allowing a bit of airflow.

I actually tried this once with window screen just like that, and it ended being that it wasn't fine enough.

Also I couldn't get the screen tight enough over the fan so the screen got sucked into the fan, making it much louder...quite annoying

Did you tried to use the pantyhose? If so, did it work?

Thanks!

Didn't even thing of that! It could work but since it's a very soft material it'd once again need to be nice and tight to avoid getting sucked it. They ripped easy though so that could become problematic too. Good idea though, I'll have to try that some time

btw found some pc filter foam about 1 sqt of material in one package http://www.amazon.com/PuraPC-Computer-Air-Filter-Material/dp/B000FJU8BC

I scheduled my calendar to clean my pc with compressed air once a month. It's in my bedroom (in the corner of the room) on the floor (hard wood). It is between the wall and my desk, so it can get dusty. I also have a corsair psu with the psu sucking air from the ground. My case is the cooler master elite 430.

Should I check/clean my pc more often, and should I add a filter to the psu fan?

Thanks!

If you're already cleaning it once a month you can definitely check/clean the filters at the same time.

Any intake fan should ideally have a filter. The fan on the PSU is an intake fan.

I have used this material for quite a few years on PC's, less air restriction then foam. Probably either one will work.

Take a look at them, the pictures on HD's website aren't very detail; the material looks like a loosely woven 3M scrubbing pad.
I usually cleaned them a couple times, then cut new ones and reeplaced.

I've used pantyhose in the past with very good success. After trying various kinds, I found the support hose work best as they are heavier than standard pantyhose. They also come in various colors, too.

Thanks for all the responses! I was wondering how can I apply the filter for the psu. My PSU is the Corsair HX650, and my case is the Cooler Master Elite 430. The PSU fan is facing down, so it's sucking air from the ground. Can I use electrical tape? Space is tight in the case, so I will have to take everything off to get the bottom of the PSU. I count myself blessed that I didn’t destroy anything the first time I put everything in, and I really don’t want to push my luck.

Thanks!

Easiest: Use masking tape or duct tape (especially if you can find some in black) and tape your filter over the grill on the bottom of the case on the outside. Should work really well with pantyhose. Electricians tape may not hold over a period of time, but if you are cleaning the case every month it should last that long (cleaning to cleaning).
If you need more clearance, the put the PC up on a couple books, could even raise just the back end; or if that isn't acceptable cut some pieces of wood that are slightly bigger then the case feet and 1/2" - 1" thick, paint them black and use them to raise the case.
