I am making a computer for work and need to hook up 6 4k monitors. I am going with a GTX 980 SLI. My question is will 2 GTX 980 SLI work for connecting 6 monitors or will I need 3 in SLI?

Solution
You don't need the performance of a 980 but you want enough vram and 3x dp for each card. Save some money with 2x 970.
Sli is limited to 4 monitors. It doesn't matter how many cards in sli, it's still 4. Not in sli and adding more cards will let you use more monitors. A 980 supports 4 monitors so you can do just 2 but what work are you doing that needs 980?

Splendid
According to http://www.geforce.com/hardware/desktop-gpus/geforce-gtx-980/specifications
The max rez is 4k. Even though the card supports up to 4 monitors, the max rez is still 4k, (e.g., you could run 4x 1080 screens).
IF thats true, you would need 1 card per monitor at 4k.

Also, SLI/CF combine the power of two or more cards to (usually) output to a single monitor.

Funny enough, cheaper less powerful cards like the 960 can run up to 5120x3200, which is still nowhere near 4k x2.

Good luck finding a board that can hold 6 cards.
