Horrible Anti-Aliasing in all the games I play

I've been having this problem in a lot of games I play, in fact all of them. Despite cranking up AA options to max or close to max, no matter what I do be it control panel changes or other tweaks, the AA is always awful and I'm at a loss as to how to fix it. I have a 1080P monitor and I sit rather close but even when I move farther back for testing purposes, I can still tell the bad AA.

And this is all my games, GTA 5, Dying Light, Far Cry. Unless I have way to high standards for AA, I think the AA looks awful. If I'm just expecting to much tell me.
 
That is not AA, that is Aliasing. AA stands for Anti aliasing, and is used to prevent aliasing. Anyways, there isn't a lot you can do short of SSAA, down sampling, or SMAA injectors. You'll find that MSAA is limited in what it targets. The aliasing doesn't look that bad. It is pretty standard for todays games. You might be able to improve some of the aliasing by using Nvidia's transparency AA methods within the control panel.

You could try a higher resolution monitor to help reduce the size of the aliasing. Of course that'll require a higher end GPU.

Already tried that, the Nvidia control panel seems to have no effect. And games such as GTA 5 look as if they have no AA enabled even when its maxed at 8X or any other lower settings. Its as if AA settings have no effect on the games I have. And just to clear up any questions I'm running a GTX 980.
 


The problem is that you are probably using MSAA. While MSAA does smooth out some aliasing, it only targets the edges of objects, but does not help out on foliage, textures, or details within an object. SMAA injectors might help a bit, as it is post process, and doesn't limit itself to outer edges. Forcing FXAA may help some, but it seems to be pretty crude.

Down sampling would be a decent route, but you'll be increasing the resolution the game is rendered, which will drop FPS a fair bit. http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2252699&highlight=

And yes, you are expecting a lot. A higher resolution monitor may be what you need, as you are quite picky.

Yeah, the aliasing doesn't look bad, or at least it doesn't look worse than what I think you should expect. Keep in mind, there are no straight lines in nature, and unless a line is perfectly straight either horizontal or vertical, then it will be aliased. This game has a whole lot of nature.

I went about trying to reduce the aliasing in TW3, using the swords on Geralt's back as my reference. There's nothing worth doing in the control panel really. MFAA isn't even compatible with the game engine according to nvidia. You can see that 4K - DSR improves things but not very much at all.

Your solution for true change is going to a 4K monitor. It just depends how important that is.

I am thinking of upgrading my monitor to 1440p. I am wondering, will I still be able to run all new games at absolute max settings with one GTX 980 and and i5 4670K, and get consistent 60 FPS? And is anti-aliasing recommended at 1440P, or is it redundant?
 
AA won't become unnecessary, just less noticeable. And you probably will need to reduce settings form time to time, depending on the game. TW3 is likely one that you will need to reduce settings on. Just remember, the resolution is also a setting. Playing at 1080p and Ultra is not necessarily superior to 1440p at high. It is just a different balance of settings. What is better is subjective.

you would have to get a retina display @ 326 ppi inorder for AA not to mater anymore, i think apple makes them in there apple air. basicly the pixels would have to be so dence or the monitor so small the you eye would not be able to tell the difrence between one pixel and another. when they are talking 4 k they mean 4 k it is just another screen. i think dell also makes a ultra high dense (retina display) screen in upward of 10000 dollars for professional graphic designers.
