GTX 480
win 7 64

Playing the game at native resolution 1680x1050 I am getting 15 fps average when in game on high and also medium settings. Dropping to low settings gives me about 5 more fps. If I am looking at the ocean I might get 35 fps but whenever I move around or basically do anything I am in the teens fps wise. How is this happening when my specs should be more than enough to run this game? And the default settings put it at high with some ultra settings.

What gives?

Solution
I applied the paste and everything works silky smooth now! So glad I didnt cause any lasting damage. I just ran bf3 at high settings and it did not drop below 50 fps. I checked my cpu temps afterwards and was running at 74c. So Im pretty happy now.
Could be many things. DONT COUNT OUT A SOFTWARE PROBLEM. I would start with defragging the hard drive (AND DEFRAG THE REGISTRY) Run some tune up program on your windows and run a benchmark like passmark performance test. This will help narrow down the problem.
Other things to check: Make sure your power is plugged into the gpu (if it has extra power plug) Make sure that your gpu is not getting too hot ( check for dust accumulated on the heatsink). Make sure you have the latest drivers. Basically, check everything. It takes a whole machine to play games, it is not just the video card, and not necessarily the video card's fault if it is not working properly.

I checked on your specific card. GTX 480 is a power hog and gets really hot. My guess is that it is getting hot. Performance diminishes dramatically when they get to a certain temp. make sure you clean the heatsink/fan on it. Install a monitoring program so you can watch the temp of everything.

I have a 750W PSU and lots of room and 5 fans. I just bought this PC off ebay and the HD was wiped. I just downloaded steam and latest drivers and installed 4 games.

On all the games I am getting an audio stuttering accompanied by drops in fps intermittently. In general the fps is very "jerky" and will go from a smooth 40-50ish to sudden drops in the teens just moving my mouse around.

I just ran passmark and these are my scores

Passmark Rating: 2151
CPU Mark: 3899
2D graphics mark: 429
3D graphics mark: 3989
Memory mark: 1496
Disk Mark: 1291

Well I just realized how much of an idiot i am. When I received this PC I completely forgot to apply thermal paste when I screwed the cpu fan in. My guess is this was probably the performance problem all along as my cpu temps got up to 95c. I had the pc on for about a day with maybe about 3hrs total of gaming. Yes im a complete idiot and im scared ive just destroyed a major part on the pc i just bought.

I doubt you've done any serious damage. Apply the paste and report back :)
