Hey i'm hosting a LAN party with 5-10 people and i was wondering how i could connect everyone by Ethernet to my modem. I'm going to buy this switch http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833124006

and what i'm guessing i have to do is connect everyone via Ethernet cable to this switch, plug the switch into my modem and i'm good to go.

Then everyone can go onto the LAN server options for arma 2 minecraft, mount and blade warband, Rome total war, Unturned.

I am hosting the server on my PC (i'm also playing on the same PC) and my friends are joining the same server (obviously). Just so i don't look like a fool before everyone comes do i have everything right? Is there anything i left out? Any help is appreciated.

For game play I would think 100Mbit with low (LAN) latency would be plenty. If you have a machine dedicated to being a game server for multiple people, then gigabit for that host would be appropriate.

Only comments I can make here are to make sure the switch you purchase as enough 10/100/1000 Mbps ports. The only you linked only has 10/100 Mbps ports. The basic set up is correct, but I'm not sure if everyone is going to need to join a home group or open ports, or whatnot.

Does your modem have an integrated router (has 4 LAN ports) or is it a modem-only device?

If it's a modem-only, then you can have a LAN party but no access to the Internet and each PC must have a manually assigned IP address.

If it's a modem/router, you shouldn't have any setup issues.

Its a modem with a built in router. I dont get what Wolf means by the ports, do you mean that everyone has to have a 10/100 mpb port if the switcher is a 10/100 mpb port.
