So, for quite a while I have been the person to host servers for my friends when we go to play minecraft. We play on small, sub 10 player servers that usually aren't too hard to host. With small modpacks and vanilla I have been fine, but recently we have been moving on to larger, harder to run modpacks. I can host the server just fine, but me playing on it at the same time really hurts it (something that's i'd really like to be able to do). So I had an idea. I could try to use my mom's pretty bad computer to host it while she isn't using it. That or find another computer I could use to host besides mine. Her computer has 4gb of ram and 1.6ghz dual core I believe.

TL;DR Would it be worth hosting a server on a separate, bad computer and what minimum requirements would a computer need to host

Solution
Yes, you probably could host it on your mothers computer.

Joining the server while on the same IP address as the server will generally
slow down the servers performance. 4GB of RAM and a 1.6ghz processor
would be fine. But there is one more variable, how fast is your internet?
Probably the most important thing alongside RAM, having a good internet
connection is crucial if you want a low-latency server. 10Mbs upload and
download could host a maximum of around 30 players without any plugins
on the server.
