Hot HDD in dual-drive Portable

Aug 26, 2006

I've got a 3 year old HP Pavillion laptop which holds two disk drives.

I loaded Speedfan onto it the other day and noticed that one of my drives (drive 0,primary drive, WDC3200BEKT-00F3T, Western Digital Scorpio Black 320GB 7200RPM SATA-300 16MB Cache 2.5-inch ) is running at ~52 Degrees C while my drive 1 (ST 9160821AS, Seagate Momentus 5400.3 160GB 5400RPM Ultra ATA-100 8MB Cache 2.5-inch ) is running at only 38 degrees C.

Of course these are both frigid when compare to the GPU, which is running at 73 Degrees but I'm concerned about reliability. I would expect the 7200 RPM drive to run hotter than the 5400 RPM drive but >50 degrees seems a bit high. I have the laptop sitting on a wire rack to elevate it an maximize airflow and I've cleaned the airflow openings but am wondering if I should consider replacing the HDD (possibly with an SSD) before it craps out on me.

Any thoughts or opinions?
