Hot temperatures while using IntelBurnTest

My core temperatures are around 98 degrees while doing a stress test with intelburntest (maximum stress test)

BUT, while gaming, my core temps don't go above 72. My heatsink is well seated, and I have 3 fans installed. I am using stock heatsink, but I am not overclocking my CPU. My CPU fan goes around 2000RPM while it's under heavy load.

So I am wondering... why is my cpu so hot while using this program? Knowing that 98 degrees is close to a shutdown.

CPU: Intel Core i7 2600 3.4ghz (Sandy Bridge)
GPU: Asus Radeon R9 270X
RAM: Kingston 8GB DDR3 1333mhz
PSU: 750W Thermaltake
Case: Antec P183 V3

Solution
It isn't called Intel Burn Test for nothing, and with the stock cooler you can get really high temps, as IBT does put a rather unrealistic high load on the CPU that you won't see in day to day usage. The stock cooler isn't really designed for that kind of stress test scenario, and as such it's not a good idea to use Intel Burn Test without aftermarket cooling.

Alright, I had no reason to be worried then. I have tested a lot of pc's in the past with stock coolers, and I have never reached above 85 degrees celcius, surprisingly.

Thanks for your help.

Depending on how much stressful CPU usage your system undergoes, you may want to clean off the old Thermal Paste and repalce it with new. The Sandy Bridge class has been around for about 4 years now. Daily use at near max temps could have dried out the old TIM by this time.
