Okay so this hotel I'm staying at for a week has a password gated wi-fi.

They have a system of 20 hour wi-fi codes purchase and you login via 192.168.100.1:8000 and you put in your password and it counts down your 20 hours. You can just log out and the count down will stop.

I can enter all websites so far that I've tried and I can also use Skype.

But I can neither loginto Steam or use any other online game as it just gives me a pop up of connection error.

I've searched around a bit and got hinted that a VPN might help but I do not know of any reliable FREE VPN, maybe someone can suggest one?

Anyway, is there any workaround for this problem?

BTW, I'm using a laptop.

Got to the people in the hotel, ask them, they are the people who blocked it. Fingers crossed they remember how to do it. We cannot help you, they can.

I've had this type of experience at hotels with just trying to stream video. The connection just kept dropping even though the signal strength was strong. I am inclined to think that it is some sort of throttling by the hotel to keep you from using to much of their bandwidth. That or they just don't have enough bandwidth to go around. I would see if you could find out if there is any fine print involving streaming, games, downloading....

I was not informed of any ban about gaming or such things. Also, clogging up bandwith doesnt make sense since I am able to download files normally to my computer and why would they allow that if they didnt want clogging.

My guess is, some kind of high end network security guy did some modifications, specifically disabling gaming port or something.. I guess my only option is to ask the lady at the register about it...

It has to be gated internally cause I can use a program like skype but not my gaming software...

I just tried Skype and I cant use the chat and also I can't connect via video/audio to my friend. So I guess only searching the web is allowed... this is riddiculous, I am paying money and they are restricting my shit. I just checked the notice board and there is nothing there about ban on programs/gaming.
