HotU too easy?

Hi folks!

I started HotU with a lvl 16 monk (so slightly above the recommende level
15) and without looking at hint books or anything like that, it was more or
less a walk-through up to chapter 2. The riddles were no match, nor were the
Mithral-Golems etc.
I'm playing the game in NWN-Hardcore level.

I don't want to show off, and I don't think I'm the world's greatest
NWN-Player, but I never thought it was THAT easy.
(I remember the home of the Illithids in BG2 and they WERE a pain in the
ass...)

Jules

You must just have quite a powerful build then. I didn't find it *too*
difficult with my druid - but I think Deekin gets a bit too powerful in
his later levels.

Well, my character is just as powerful as any other character at level 16.
(Right now she is at the beginning of chapter 3 and lvl 25).

I already noticed that the game was rather easy when my gear was still
stolen (before I found it in that drow cavern).

Anyway, the story is quite nice. (Especially this part with that chest
stealing my armour. That was giving me a hard time until I found out I could
place the gems in a row so that the chest wouldn't jump but crawl and enter
the fire circle - and blast!)

Monks are one of the tougher classes but in regards to the ease of the
game on hardcore rules either you are a god, very lucky or a liar.
Good taste precludes me calling you a liar. The last time I checked the
stats almost no gods were using this newsgroup so I have to conclude you
are very lucky.

I, on the other hand, have been playing this game since the day it was
released and using hard core rules and no cheats means I die a lot. I
guess this means I'm not so lucky.

Hardcore rules do seem to be harder on some classes than others. I'd find
it easier with a monk than I would with a druid (this is one reason why I
don't use many spells on the PW that I play on when playing a druid) - as
most of the decent area effect spells end up splatting your allies. 🙁

Of all my characters, my monk could probably best survive without his gear -
long enough to kill whoever took it and get it back, at least. 🙂

I agree that a monk is one of the strongest classes unaugmented. I have
found that a lot depends on the gloves you find. If you pick up the
gloves of balance from the skeleton bomber's hoard or from the Ogre Mage
it makes life a lot easier. My biggest problem is that I tend to role
play rather than power game. I usually try for a character that has
good Int (14) for skills and maybe a 14 or 15 in the primary attribute.
It doesn't make for an uber character but does provide challenges.
Druids are a fun class to play and usually underestimated by most
players. Personally I like the Shifter class as implemented in the
Consortium addon.

I never said that I didn't die during the course of the game. I just said
that it seemed to be rather easy. Of course, chapter 3 is more challenging
and I have to admit that it took a lot more time to work through that one.

By the way, my intention to post the original thread was not to show off (as
I already said). All I wanted to know was whether other players got the same
impression of the game as I had...

In that case please excuse my smartass remarks. ;-) However I still think
that dying is a good indicator that the game isn't all that easy. A matter
of perspective I guess. As ABadeaux said, some classes have it tougher
under Hardcore Rules. In general, I've found that monks are tough and
relatively easy to play but you may run into some problems at the endgame.
A lot depends on your build and what equipment you acquire. If its a
challenge you want, try starting your build with no attributes over 15 and
in HotU start with no more than a 15th level character. The extra level
doesn/t seem like a big thing but saying "What's one extra level?" is a lot
like saying "What's one extra hand gernade?"

BTW do you play solo or with henchmen?

Of course, I hired two henchmen, although they just get the attention of
some of the monsters - I still have to finish them myself most of the time.
I don't think that this extra level really rocked. But I agree that my
impression of the game would have been entirely different, if I had started
playing with a mage or cleric or something like that.
I fact I started with a mage, but stopped after finding my stuff at the end
of chapter 1. I then switched to monk and played all over again.
Monks ARE indeed really tough fighters. They just ignore the damage
reduction all these golems have. I tried that with a rogue with +3 and +4
weapons. That gave me a hard time indeed...

I had basically the same experience. 16th level
thief/wizard. The last part of act 2 was a problem because my general
strategy has always been to support my tank and your tank doesn't come
with you in that battle, not to mention it's the third battle with no
chance to rememorize.

I had to reload a couple of times with that group of baddies in
act 3, once I got bright and summoned my familiar and the level 9
monster it suddenly became easy.

The final battle turned out utterly impossible and I don't know
what to do about it yet. My tank defected and that's that.
