How are GPUS damaged from ESD?

I was installing my gpu, while touching the screws on the back of the PSU to ground my-self. I worked on a wooden desk, bare-foot, without a rug under me. While removing my gpu, the PCI-E holder touched one part of my case that was right in the line of my gpu, it had to touch it to get removed. There was static going through the one small bumped part of the case through the GPU PCI holder. Is my gpu damaged in any way (980 ti ACX 2.0)? Is gpu death from static a hit or miss? BTW the PCIe holder is the two slot thingy. If you remove the cooler it is the metal part that you screw into the case to make it stable.

There's no real way to tell if the discharge fried your GPU - just put it in and use it. I wouldn't worry too much about it. I'm hard pressed to figure out what you did given your description but either way I'd use the card and you develop problems RMA it.

It works normally in games, no noticeable damage. Just a little worried about damage
