My current rig is as follow:
i5-2320 oc 3,5GHz (auto oc by motherboard)
Deepcool 300 for cpu hsf
MSI Z77A-G45
2x 4Gb DDR3 1600 amd performance CL9 (it only work 1333 due to intel limitation)
850W psu
480GB SSD OCZ trion 100
current gpu is R9-280 sapphire. Used to be crossfired with another 280, but sold it cause tired of crap CF support.

I mostly played games at 1080.
How bad will the i5 bottleneck either the amd 480 or GTX 1060?
Please don't suggest me buying 1070 as I am cheap :) Will sell the last 280 after buying the new gpu.

not intend to upgrade the cpu anyway, but i want to know how bottleneck it will against 480 or 1060

Some games it will at that clock speed. Based on my 3570k:

Crysis 3 maxes all cores at times causing GPU drops
Just Cause 3 does the same, also causing GPU drops

So you will be OK in most, but the older architecture and relatively slow clock speed may hurt a bit especially with a 1060. Depends what you play though!

Performance difference between Sandy Bridge and IVY Bridge is almost zero so don't worry about that, your cpu is ok for mid range cards like the 1060. If you can look around for something unlocked to get a few more years out of the build instead of "wasting" money for a current gen build or go all out with a 2011 build. I went from a i5 760 to a Xeon E5 V3 because I never had an incentive to upgrade until recently and I did it cheaply ;)

Well, i actually all rounder gamer. My main game used to be battlefield series, but quit after battlefield hard line as i see no future in destructible environment. I also played GTA5, Fallout 4, Skyrim, and recently get my hand on Tomb Raider and Just cause 3. Although i haven't start just cause cause playing Tomb raider first.

In Tomb Raider, i unable to see the fps, but mostly fine in 1080 ultra setting except a few hiccup when in open wide area with sudden move looking back. I turn down the msaa then the hiccup reduced a lot.

My cpu already oc automatically by the motherboard at 3,5GHz, and since its not an oc model, i didn't know how to oc it further. Well, i satisfied since its already upped by 16,66% of original clock without me lifting a finger.
My 280 gpu already oc into 1100/1400. I never oc using increase voltage to ensure its longetivity.

The only game i cannot play is RTS such as company of heroes, its a cool game, but my brain cannot keep up with the game without lots of sacrifice. Maybe age start hitting me :??: My eyes also declining its area of focus. I could never imagine those who use 3 monitors, I already struggled optimizing the full 1 monitor area. The only hope for me is VR.

Back to the topic, is i5-2320 really that bad against 1060 or 480? I found the bottleneck most hurt when playing battlefield hardline with crossfire 2x R9 280 (the only game that fully optimized crossfire) which can only get me 90+ fps on ultra setting while other review said a fully optimized 2x R9 280 with top of the line cpu can normally get 110+ fps. This struck me in awe for losing 20 fps due to cpu limitation. The crappies of CF support in most game (the division is the last nail in the coffin) made me sold one of the 280, buy a new gpu, then sold the last 280.

Just played just cause 3. I set most ultra by default, just change the default 720 into 1080. Seem my pc can hold out 30-60 fps. But mostly near 60 even when fighting except when playing grappling hook it dropped above 30fps. I oc the 280 further into 1100/1500 without increasing voltage. Funny thing is, I never ever see it below 30 fps no matter what. While playing video it just change between 30 or 60 fps. I think it must be fps limiter that working in chaos. I'm just glad my cpu is not giving up against just cause 3.

Unfortunately 1060 is still rare in my country. Need to get rid of my last 280 fast since 470 already released.
