How big is an army?

More specifically, how many units does an army represent as far as ships
are concerned? I just created an army on my continent and loaded it up
with cavalry, and I can't load it onto a galleon. I guess that until I get
airports I'll just have to assemble my army on the continent I want to wage
war on.

I'm guessing that the army counts as one unit and each item in the army
counts as one, so that a four-unit army would count as five, but that's
only a guess. If somebody could come back with something more definitive I
would appreciate it!

Yes, this is correct. Each unit counts as one, as does the army itself.
If you want to load up 4-units in an army, all you have to do is ship
them separately and load them up on the other side - no need for
airports. Of course, once you've filled the army, you can't bring it
back until transports.

Armies can't fly. Army components can all fly, but Army unit must go by
road/sea. Normal armies can travel by galleon. it is only when
Pentagon is built and army size increases that you can run into trouble.
