Thanks in advance!

How big of a difference would it make if I upgraded my current system from an intel Z170 chipset to an intel Z390 chipset? Should I wait for the 10 Gen from intel? Here is my current build:

Asus Z170 Pro Gaming Motherboard
intel Core i5 6500 3.6 GHZ, 4GHZ Turboboost
8 GB G Skill DDR400 RAM
Samsung EVO 850 250GB SSD

I haven't been keeping up with AMD, so any recommendations regarding them would be appreciated.

My point was not a 3800x. The 3800x is 95w vrs 3700x 65w, so requires beefier cooling or gets higher temps with the same cooling. The 3800x has the same everything as the 3700x, just has 1 very minor advantage if pushing the highest OC levels, otherwise it's the same cpu.

No benefits, just more cost. A 3600 is good for gaming and general use, if you feel like tinkering and upgrading the cooling to something snazzy. The 3600x is a set-it and forget-it cpu, already has better cooling and doesn't take well to tinkering with because it's already pushed to the limit by amd. The 3700x is a step up, especially for the really heavy usage gamer, production, or content creator. The 3800x is a waste of money, doesn't offer even the advantages...
Thanks in advance!

Well it would benefit you to upgrade. I wouldn’t touch Intel right now, way too expensive and inefficient. AMD is the money at the moment. Motherboards that support multiple generations, cheaper for equal performance. Ryzen 4000 series will be out in 4 months or so. Z390 is about to be obsolete and z490 is gonna be even MORE expensive. X570 for AMD has newer tech and will be comparatively priced if not cheaper. Get a Ryzen 3600 minimum, 3700x if you can afford. Best bet is to wait if your current system is doing ok.

Thanks for the insight! I really need to look at benchmarks, too. I mainly use my computer to write, surf, and watch movies.

Are the 10th gen intel CPU's going to be as good/better than AMD?

Intel is still using old tech and squeezing what they can out of it. 10 series is a refresh of 9 which was a refresh of 8 which was a refresh of 7 so on and on lol. I own a 9900k and I’d buy AMD if I was building a new PC. Just made one for my wife and used the Ryzen 3600. Overclocked it to 4.5 and it’s a beast for $175.

10700k has basically the same stats as a 9900k. The 10700k is msrp $349, the 9900k is $524. The 10c/20t top of the heap i9-10900 is msrp $428.
Supposedly, as leaked info reports.

Absolutely not worth investing in a second rate cpu that's just shy of $200 more expensive. Even if the Z490 mobo prices were rediculous (like the Z390 aren't....) they won't be That rediculous, still leaving a $200 hole burnt in your pocket. For somewhat equitable performance.

When it comes to Intel lately, I really don't find my lack of faith disturbing. AMD just got my money about 2 hrs ago in fact lol.

Sad to see intel let go like that.

This is the CPU I'm going to buy:
AMD RYZEN 7 3800X 8-Core 3.9 GHz (4.5 GHz Max Boost)

What ram do you recommend would perform best? Here is what I've got so far:

Motherboard:
https://www.newegg.com/asus-rog-strix-x570-f-gaming/p/N82E16813119195

RAM:
https://www.newegg.com/corsair-16gb-288-pin-ddr4-sdram/p/N82E16820236417

Not a 3800x.

Mobo and ram aren't bad, but unless there's something on that ROG you really want, the Asus Tuf Gaming Plus at @ $180 is just as good.

You are looking at 3rd Gen Ryzen. That means 3600MHz ram. 3200MHz was for 2nd Gen sweetspot.
I agree there’s no reason to get a 3800x. 3700x or 3900x based on budget. RAM you want DDR 3600 CAS 16. Motherboard is preference and there’s not much reason to spend a lot unless the board has a particular feature you need or you’re gonna overclock heavy. Most boards will overclock AMD just fine.

It's a Value thing. The 3600 offers by far the best value in performance per $. The 3800x offers the worst.
