My current system has;
AMD FX-4100
8gb 1600mhz ram
AMD Radeon R9 270
256GB ssd and a 1tb hard rive. It's slightly overclocked also.

Would getting an i5-6500 and 8gb DDR4 ram be worth an upgrade, not paying full retail but at around 100-150 GBP from a friend?

thanks in advance, i mainly game but do some photoshop and school work etc!

Yes, it makes sense. However, without RAM it's not that big deal. For about 155 GBP, you could have i3-8100 + cheap B360 motherboard, new, which would be much better option. Not saying that 6500 is bad, but it is already outdated (though not as much as your 4100).
You mean 150 GBP for CPU, motherboard and RAM? Great deal. However, how much upgrade it would be depend on games you play. It is quite possible in some games you will see no improvement because they may be limited by GPU, not CPU. But overall, i5-6500 is clearly better CPU.

I'd be able to get the CPU and MOBO for like 120-130 i think without the RAM though sadly, the games i play mainly are PUBG, bioshock, battlefield, fortnite, typically shooters that are not the MOST demanding if that helps. I'd also upgrade GPU eventually and feel like the platform upgrade is a big help if that makes sense....
