How Can A Smartphone Stand Out In A Sea Of Sameness? Specialize

I can't remember a "Specialized" phone that sold well. Facebook Phone, Active Phones, Camera Phones, HI-Fi phones... have all been a flop. I think the only way to do well is the Motorola way: try to keep your useless messing to a minimum and think about what the user wants. The only company that gets away screwing their clients is Apple, and that is hardly replicable.

I believe the "Specalize" is in regards to a stand out feature over other phones
ie;
The Lumia 1020 has one of(if not) the best cameras in the phone world,
iPhones Fingerprint "Camera"
Microsofts 950/XL Iris Camera which unlocks your phone when you look at it, even in dark light,
Samsungs Edge Screen which allows apps and other effects outside the focus screen,
Black Berrys Physical Keyboard Phones which are just a dying breed(the keyboard i mean) but are preferred by older users.

All various features that other phones don't have but make them stand out to one particular or another.
At least that's how i feel about them making phones stand out.

"Stand out" for a few minutes to create a buzz, sure. But stand out enough to sell and compete, it hasn't worked for anyone at this point with the specialized features strategy. I have to agree with @apertotes here.

I use a Lumia 950 XL because I like telling people how special I am. I am totally fine with the $500 phone with a cheap plastic case. After all who cares about a case you cover up with another protective case. I have a freaking PC in my pocket now, and thats pretty awesome. It also comes with other special features for a flagship smart phone that separate it from competitors. It has a removable battery and additional SD slot.

Those who have never experienced a WP will knock it down. I've owned and used all of the major vendors, BB, Android, Apple, and WP. I currently use an Apple handset for work and a Lumia Icon for personal. I'd take the Icon 10:1 over any other product. Now let's watch this response get downvoted into oblivion charging "oh but the apps!" (what apps ...?)

People are afraid to actually say something MS has developed is good. I'd own a 950 if it were supported by Verizon, the monopoly in my area. Lumia's are truly awesome mobile devices.
