How can I determine the sata type (2or 3 , 3gb/s or 6gb/s) of my laptop. It is a HP 15-r011dx

Hey there, Chris_s

I'd recommend that you look through the user's manual or get in touch with the laptop's customer support to ask about that. If you're asking so that you know what HDD/SSD to get, then I'd say that you go with a SATA III (6Gb/s). The SATA interface is backwards compatible, so you'd have no problem using a SATA III HDD or SSD with a SATA II port. Just one small note here - if this is the case and you're thinking of getting an SSD - it would be bottlenecked a bit by the older SATA II interface, because it allow speeds of up to 300MB/s, but other than that it should run without a hitch.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the response, I had thought it would not be a problem knowing that it was backwards compatible but wasn't sure. Not wanting ssd , just replacing crashed drive and wanted to upgrade a little. Also I was getting frustrated with the fact that I cannot find out how to verify this on a system that won't boot. Thanks again, but still would like to know how to verify by mobo or other means . just curious now.

Well if you can't find that info somewhere in your BIOS settings as @FireWire2 suggested, having in mind you can't boot to Windows, there are not many options left to exploit besides the ones I've already mentioned.
You could create an Ubuntu Live USB by using a different computer (this is basically a bootable, freeware, portable version of Linux) by following this tutorial: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/create-a-usb-stick-on-windows. Boot to Linux with the laptop in question and take a look at that thread here: http://superuser.com/questions/417857/how-to-find-sata-controller-version-on-ubuntu-laptop-do-i-have-sata-1-2-or-3 and also this article: http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/linux-command-to-find-sata-harddisk-link-speed/

Cheers!
