Basically, if you have windows home (7-8.1-10) you have to buy the version you want, wipe and reinstall.

You need a pro or ultimate version to do it for free.

There are two better options. First, you could install the free Classic Shell which will give Windows 8.1 the look and feel of Windows 7. Alternatively you could take advantage of the free upgrade to Windows 10 which brings back the Start button to Windows.
