How Can I Fix the UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP Windows 8 Error?

UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP is displayed in the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD). The error is mostly generated due to hardware failure or because of installation of inappropriate or incompatible device drivers. As with other Blue Screen of Death errors, a simple restart may resolve the issue. However if the problem persists, the computer must be restarted in safe mode and any newly installed device driver must be uninstalled to make Windows 8 computer run smoothly.

Another reason why a Windows 8 system might display UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP error may be because of dusty or carbon covered PCI components like external LAN cards, TV tuner cards, etc. In such cases, the devices must be disconnected from the computer, cleaned, and reconnected to the computer.

By default Windows 8 does not allow users to press F8 or Shift + F8 to enter into the advanced boot menu in order to start the operating system in safe mode. In order to start Windows 8 in safe mode, advanced boot menu must be enabled manually. After restarting in safe mode, the problematic device drivers can be uninstalled, and the compatible version of drivers can be downloaded and installed to resolve the issue.
