How can I force Win7 to use an XP driver?

An excellent printer/fax/scanner in my office cannot work from Win7, according to itself.
No updated Win7 driver seems to be available for my HP Color LaserJet 2840.

I've seen it work before, but do not know how to do it.
How can I force Win7 to use an XP driver (in the machine that's connected to the printer) over the network?

It says Not compatible with x64bit Win7.

Others are saying, it is printing, but fax and scanning is not.

There is no official support for Win 7, but u can try the Vuescan 9 @ http://www.hamrick.com/

I don't think it's possible. Vista drivers will usually work, but not XP. Did you try HP's universal print driver? http://h20271.www2.hp.com/SMB-AP/cache/380442-0-0-190-121.html

Yes, Sir.
It botched the printouts something terrible. In some cases, only the yellow toner came out.

Looks simple, doesn't it?
But, when trying to install, it attempts to contact Windows Update, lingers around for six minutes, and then reports that no driver was found (on the XP machine, I suppose).

Can u try to install the XP driver in the compatibility mode?

Will try.

That's a route I've been looking for, but never attempted.
Will need permissions from System Manager (that hasn't managed so far) first.

That would be the joke of the month.

As a board meeting is coming up, the XP computer with the HP attached is swamped with folks making printout tests. I haven't been able to use the scanner function for hours.

Always start at the very last minute, eh?

The easiest way I found is to Add printer, local printer, new port.
In the new port box type \\[Server name]\[Printer name].

Make sure its exactly as it appears, including spaces.

Follow the rest of the prompts, select the correct print driver (windows should have it on the list) and don't setup sharing.

Its worked for me.

I have fooled around before with all sorts of solutions that didn't quite work. This time it did. The trick was to not try to use an XP driver, but a 'local' printer that's really on the network somewhere ...

I had to alter my choice of driver though. The PostScript driver for the 2800 series Color LaserJets did the thing. Sillily enough, because it didn't when I tried exactly that driver last year. A test installation on my personal laptop worked, so now my Systems Manager can copy the settings straight off.

Now, I only have to crack the problems we have with the software ported from the Macintosh world, but I will not bother you with that bowl of entangled spaghetti.
