How can I get my display to only use a portion of my laptop's screen?

I have a circle of dead pixels, roughly 30cm x 30cm, in the top left of my VAIO's screen. I can't afford to get the screen replaced atm. How can I make my laptop think that the 50cm of the screen on the left, for example, doesn't exist and use the rest of the screen as normal? Any ideas? Windows7 btw, thanks.

I have the old ATI Catalyst Control Centre which doesn't have any 'scaling' and, as far as I can tell, won't update either.

Look for any resolution options that keep the same vertical resolution but decrease the horizontal resolution. These may be available in the Windows control panel but you might have to use some other software to set a custom resolution.
